Teacher Loan Forgiveness Program
Most Region 9 Schools Eligible!
June 21, 2008
Each year TEA establishes a list of teaching assignments in shortage areas and a list of low-income schools for its Teacher Loan Forgiveness Program. The recently released 2007-2008 list of eligible schools includes most campuses in Region 9. Teachers serving in eligible assignments at these schools can receive student loan forgiveness benefits. The TEA has authorized school principals to act on behalf of the Commissioner of Education to certify that a teacher has met the minimum qualifications required.
Eligibility for the program is determined by multiple factors including:
A. Date of a teacher’s first loan
B. Teaching assignment at a designated low-income school (click here for list of Region 9 eligible schools)
C. Length of teaching assignment
D. Teaching assignment in a Texas shortage area. These areas are: Mathematics, Science, Bilingual/ESL, Special Education, Foreign Language, Technology Applications
More information about eligibility for the program and application forms can be found on the TEA website at http://www.tea.state.tx.us/edex/loanforgive.html.
