Email Security Alert

by Mike Campbell

March 04, 2009

You’ve heard stories recently about people in our area receiving e mails from official sounding businesses asking for logins, pins and passwords.  They even have a bank or EBay’s logo included in the e-mail.  Typically, they will have link that you can click on to enter the information that they are requesting.  These are known as phishing attempts and the link connects you to their computers.  You will receive an e-mail requesting this private information in the hopes that you will send it to them.  Don’t!  You are giving them the keys to your kingdom.  Identity theft is becoming one of the most popular crimes these days and crooks are getting braver and smarter about how they do it.

If you have a question about the legitimacy of an e-mail, pick up the phone and call the institution to verify.  Most importantly, let them know about the problem.  If you have questions about Region 9 e-mail, call David Blankenship at 940-322-6928.
